Tin is an essential metal, widely used in modern industries for its corrosion resistance, malleability, and sustainability. It is the backbone of industrial progress, playing a pivotal role in electronics, packaging, and high-performance alloys. From the Bronze Age to the digital era, tin has been shaping civilizations, and today, it remains indispensable in global supply chains. For centuries, tin has been a silent force in human advancement. Ancient metallurgists discovered that combining tin with copper created bronze, a material that revolutionized tools, weapons, and trade. Fast forward to today, and tin remains just as crucial-powering our digital world, preserving food, and strengthening materials used in aerospace and infrastructure.
The Democratic Republic of Congo is one of the world’s most significant tin-producing regions, rich in cassiterite-the primary tin ore. The industry here has deep historical roots, from early artisanal mining to the development of mechanized operations that have transformed the sector. The DRC’s tin is now a key driver of economic progress, with MMR at the forefront of responsible and large-scale mining operations.
Tin mining in the DRC is more than an industry; it is interwoven with the cultural and economic fabric of the region. For generations, miners have extracted cassiterite from the rich soils, supporting families and shaping communities. This long history is evolving, as MMR leads a transition toward responsible, large-scale production that benefits both the region and the global tin market.
Since 2009, MMR has led the way in developing a world-class tin mining and processing operation in the DRC. Our journey is a story of commitment, investment, and transformation, ensuring that the region’s natural resources are harnessed responsibly and effectively.
Mining: Artisanal and Mechanized Operations
Tin mining in the DRC has long included both artisanal and mechanized methods. MMR recognizes the role of Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM) in the broader supply chain and supports efforts to integrate ethical ASM sourcing within international compliance frameworks.
At the same time, our mechanized mining operations represent the future-efficient, sustainable, and built to meet global demand with the highest industry standards.
For many miners, the shift from ASM to mechanized operations is a turning point. The adoption of modern extraction methods has increased efficiency, safety, and environmental sustainability. This evolution is not just about production-it is about building a responsible and ethical industry that benefits all stakeholders.
Processing and Smelting: The First and Only Tin Smelter in the DRC
A defining milestone in our journey was the establishment of the first and only tin smelter in the DRC. This facility enables MMR to refine tin locally, ensuring value addition within the country and a cleaner, more transparent supply chain. By processing tin in-house, we reduce reliance on external refiners, strengthening the DRC’s position in the global market.
With the smelter, MMR has redefined the way tin is processed in the region. Prior to its establishment, most Congolese tin was exported in its raw form. Today, we refine high-purity tin locally, adding value to the national economy and reinforcing traceability efforts. This is more than a business achievement-it is a transformation of the DRC’s role in the global tin market.
At MMR, responsible mining is not just an obligation-it is our foundation. We strictly adhere to OECD Due Diligence Guidance and work in alignment with the Responsible Minerals Initiative (RMI) to maintain full traceability and ethical sourcing. These frameworks are integrated into our mining, processing, and smelting operations, ensuring that every shipment of tin we produce meets global ethical standards.
In an industry where responsible sourcing is paramount, MMR has set new benchmarks. Our commitment to compliance is not about meeting minimum requirements-it is about leading by example. The consequences of non-compliance are severe for both companies and communities, and we take our role in preventing conflict minerals from entering supply chains with the utmost seriousness.
As we continue expanding, our vision remains clear: to solidify the DRC’s position as a leader
in ethical tin production. Our roadmap includes:
MMR is not just mining tin-we are shaping the future of the industry. Our expansion plans aim to increase output, drive technological innovation, and elevate the DRC’s global standing in the tin sector. We envision a future where Congolese tin is synonymous with quality, sustainability, and progress.
For over a decade, MMR has been shaping the future of tin mining in the DRC. From mine to metal, our journey continues-driven by innovation, responsibility, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.
